The Joy of Giving Sports and Sportsmanship Accountability Pass it Forward Application
Lesson 1: The Joy of Giving

Think about a time when someone gave you an unexpected gift. Were you surprised? Were you happy? Giving has the amazing power to help cheer us up, inspire us to be our best, and shows us that we are part of a wonderful and kind global community!

Give Joy Quote

It makes you happy! Giving promotes feelings of pleasure, trust, friendship and community.

It's good for your health! "Researchers suggest that one reason giving may improve physical health and longevity is that it helps decrease stress, which is associated with a variety of health problems. In a 2006 study by Rachel Piferi of Johns Hopkins University and Kathleen Lawler of the University of Tennessee, people who provided social support to others had lower blood pressure than participants who didn’t, suggesting a direct physiological benefit to those who give of themselves.

Giving promotes cooperation! When you give, you’re more likely to get back: Several studies have suggested that when you give to others, your generosity is likely to be rewarded by others down the line—sometimes by the person you gave to, sometimes by someone else.

Giving is contagious! When we give, we don’t only help the immediate recipient of our gift. We also spur a ripple effect of generosity through our community." °

Lesson 2: Sports & Sportsmanship

Sports and activities help us in so many ways! They improve our health & self-confidence, they teach us about leadership, goal setting, teammwork and so much more. Playing a sport can even help us make new friends!

Look at the following chart and think about some of the things that sports have taught you:

Why play sports

Good sportsmanship is ALWAYS important when playing sports. Whether before, during or after a match, game, or practice, the lessons that we learn from sportsmanship help us develop important skills such as accountability, compassion, and bravery.

Read the following definition of sportsmanship,
then think of two ways that YOU can show good sportsmanship:

Lesson 3: Accountability

Playing sports teaches us about the importance of accountability & respect. When you join a team, you become responsible for how your actions affect others. Showing up on time, working your hardest, listening to your coach, and acting on behalf of the team are all ways that we demonstrate accountability. Accountability means that if you say you are going to do something, you do it! It means that we act in an honest, responsible way that benefits ourselves and the people around us. The best part is that when you are accountable to your actions, you will gain respect!

If selected for the Pass it Forward program, we will send you a Pass it Forward volleyball, basketball or soccer ball. With this ball, you will be responsible for completing the following mission:

PLAY with it - Grab some friends, get out, and have some fun with your ball!

POST about it - Maybe you will go to a park, meet someone new, or show someone how to play...either way, we will want to know exactly what you and your ball have been up to! Then, you will need to share your Pass if Forward photos and story on this website.

PASS it on - Give someone the opportunity to spread the joy of sport and play; give your ball to someone new!

Sound like a plan? Well, enough reading! Go ahead to the next page to finish your application!
